Facebook’s New Photo Uploader Coming & Gmail Killer In Talks
by Aayush On February 8th,2010UPDATE: The Plug-in was believed to be a browser extension but instead is a new Java Plug-in.
Facebook has announced on their official blog that they will be deploying a new, improved photo uploader for the Photos application, It will be rolling out gradually over the next several weeks.
With Facebook’s growing popularity, it has become the world’s largest photo-sharing service on the Internet with over 2.5 billion photos uploaded to Facebook each month. Due to technical issues and complex installation of the current photo uploader which is a Java App, Facebook is rolling out a new improved uploader which will be a browser Plug-in. When deployed for you, the first time you go to upload a photo, you will be asked to install this Plug-in.
The Plug-in consists of a simple file explorer on the top which looks somewhat similar to the MAC Finder, below which are the thumbnail previews of the image files. You can then select multiple photos, method of which I’m guessing will be similar to the way we select multiple friends.
All in all looks like a pretty good improvement over the Current Java App.
Facebook seems to be on fire this month with the launch of HipHop for PHP last week, the photo uploader and the talks of a supposed Gmail killing full fledged Web-Mail Product is everywhere on the Internet, Internally it’s called Project Titan.
Project Titan is said to have full POP/IMAP support, which means users will be able to access their mails with applications other than Facebook like Mozilla Thunderbird. The address is said to be your ‘vanityurl’ followed by @facebook.com (vanityurl@facebook.com).
Gmail Killer or Not, is something we’ll all have to wait & see.
