Internet security experts want you to keep your eyes open and be careful while using USB flash drives or filling up IQ tests on websites because a killer virus has been discovered which is capable of making your hard drive as good as a vegetable.

killer virusThe Virus known as Win32.Worm.Zimuse which is spreading in two variants Win32.Worm.Zimuse.A and Win32.Worm.Zimuse.B is potentially more dangerous for your computer than being behind the water hose. The Virus which originated from Slovakia was meant to be a malicious prank intended only for fans of a Slovakian motorcycle gang but has now managed to spread across computers in the United States, Thailand, and Italy.

Both variants of the virus work in the same fashion, they start with creating between 10 to 11 copies of themselves then install a rootkit and alter system registries by creating several driver files but the virus only comes alive after a set number of days(40 for A and 20 for B) with a fake Windows Defender Warning:

System Defender – Kernel Error 0xC00000005
This problem is unambigously cause by malicious contents in IP packers in transport layer from website: www.offroad-lm.szm.sk. To bee patient, Windows Defender scan your hard drive(s) for bugs caused by system incompatible code. To recovery of system press OK button. Wait to successfull end of scanning. Inform about this administrator on www.szm.sk and incriminated web site

Once you get that message, no one can save the data on your hard drive or even the hard drive itself. Since the virus overwrites the Master Boot Record, the next time you switch on your computer you will be greeted with the fatal error “FATAL: No bootable medium found” which implies your hard drive is now permanently dead. On top of that, until the warning message(windows defender) pops up it is impossible to detect whether your system is infected or not.

Win32.Worm.Zimuse.A spreads itself by appearing on legit sites as an IQ test, possibly by poisoning an ad network and embedding itself on the website.
Win32.Worm.Zimuse.B spreads itself via exchangeable media like USB flash drives.

We would recommend you to back up all your data at all times, keep your Anti-Virus definitions up-to date and stay away form IQ tests or for that matter any kind of surveys or tests on websites.
